Job Description
Inspects and maintains Fairfax County departmental aircraft in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and standards. Inspect and adjust aircraft engines and pneumatic systems, remove and install aircraft components and diagnose problems. Duties also include checking electrical systems, repairing pilot static systems and performing regular preventive inspections, and examine aircraft fuselage and landing gear for cracks or leakage. Repair or replace defective aircraft parts and check completed work to ensure that it meets quality standards. Assists in the acquisition, inventory and upkeep of all maintenance equipment, disposal of supplies, including petroleum, oil and other lubricants, and is accountable for maintaining accurate maintenance records.
Illustrative Duties
  • Repairs, replaces, or removes departmental aircraft components;
  • Performs maintenance work required to meet all airworthiness directives and alert service bulletins;
  • Signs aircraft airframe and engine maintenance records upon completion of service;
  • Executes corrosion/rust control procedures including
  • washing, waxing, and touch-up painting of aircraft and equipment; maintains ground equipment in good repair;
  • Works on a call-out basis for unscheduled emergency repairs.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of aircraft systems;
  • Knowledge of the maintenance and repair requirements of helicopter engines and airframes;
  • Skill to perform mechanical work required;
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate repairs;
  • Ability to understand and work from wiring schematics, blueprints, and drawings;
  • Ability to maintain a high level of ethical standards;
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of integrity and to be truthful at all times.
Job Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus five years experience servicing helicopters.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working on Bell 429 series helicopter.
  • Proven record of dependability.
  • Ability to understand electrical diagrams, blueprints, and drawings.
  • Extensive knowledge of helicopter airframes and engines.
  • Current FAA Inspection Authorization (IA).
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Satisfactory completion or ability to complete the Bell Factory Field Maintenance Course for Bell 429 series helicopters within nine months of appointment.
  • FAA Inspection Authorization, within three years of appointment and maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of a valid FAA Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic Certificate.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work duties requires the ability to lift 50 pounds overhead, crouching, crawling, climbing and working in restricted areas. All duties are completed with or without reasonable accommodation.

NECESSARY REQUIREMENT:
The appointee is required to complete a comprehensive public safety background investigation to include a polygraph, driving record check and pre-employment physical. A TB test is also required.

Note: Based on SOP 04-006, all police department personnel are subject to random drug testing as part of continued employment with the Fairfax County Police Department.
