Job Description


The Tucson Police Department has an exciting career opportunity for a Helicopter A&P Mechanic. The Aircraft Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, service and repair of three Bell 206-type aircraft and associated aircraft accessories and equipment in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and manufacturer specifications. This position is responsible for ensuring the safety of all aircraft by scheduling and conducting regular maintenance as required by FAA guidelines.

Job Requirements


Performs equipment inspections by making precise adjustments to mechanical and electrical systems, performing frequent multiple-point inspections on helicopters and engines, and tracking all components, engines, and accessories for life limit and overhaul requirements required by law or manufacturer.

Performs minor repairs and alterations on helicopter systems, accessories, and power plants, identifying performance issues, troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical problems, and installing replacement parts.                                           

Conducts major repairs and alterations by inspecting, disassembling, lubricating, repairing, and overhauling all major components when necessary, adding or removing extra aircraft equipment, and installing or modifying manufacturer's equipment.

Ensures aircraft meet airworthiness requirements by complying with manufacturers' service bulletins, technical bulletins, safety notes, Federal Aviation Authority's airworthiness directives, and experience  requirements.

Performs general hanger maintenance by cleaning hanger, preparing work area for inspections, maintaining tools, and complying with all Occupational Safety and Health Act standards and oversight agency requirements.

Performs related duties by contacting vendors, receiving/submitting estimates, researching and completing paperwork.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Associate's Degree

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years inspecting, overhauling, maintaining and certifying helicopters and engines

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Must provide tools except those specifically required for individual model of aircraft to be maintained

Selected applicants may be required to obtain a Certificate of Achievement from the Bell Factory Maintenance School within 18 months of hire date (paid by the City of Tucson)

Selected applicants who successfully complete the Bell Factory Maintenance School will be asked to commit to a minimum term of two years of employment. Employees who leave prior to the two year commitment may be required to reimburse the City for the cost of the Bell Factory Maintenance School.
