Job Description

Pilots will be hired into the unit as an Aircraft Pilot 1, M-2, an Aircraft Pilot 2, M-3, Aircraft Pilot 3, M-4, Aircraft Pilot 4, M-5. Appointment levels will be dependent upon the pilots FAA ratings, their proficiency, and their job responsibilities within the Aviation Unit. Pilots hired by the Division will be required to enter into a binding agreement whereby they become financially responsible for the cost of factory schools should they resign their position within one year of being sent to an "Initial" factory school.

Incumbents control and navigate aircrafts to transport cargo and passengers; conduct aerial surveillance, and search and rescue activities. These positions are classified only at the Division of State Police. Specific duties include:

Operate aircraft to transport passengers, crew, and cargo, adhering to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, Division policies and procedures, and other applicable aviation rules.

Operate aircraft within performance envelopes adhering to the limitations and capabilities of the appropriate aircraft manuals.

Ensure preflight planning is completed and communicated appropriately.

Select routes, altitudes, and speeds that will provide the fastest, safest, and smoothest flights.

Inspect aircrafts and perform limited maintenance to ensure they are in airworthy condition prior to flight and ensure open communication with maintenance operations.

Ensure the safe transport of passengers and cargo.

Monitor engine operation, fuel consumption, and functioning of aircraft systems during flights.

Perform general maintenance and repairs on aircrafts; and completes records of flights and work performed.

Comply with the Aviation Unit Safety Program.

Ensure documentation and records are completed accurately and in a timely fashion.

Job Requirements

The Minimum flight time required for all positions is a total time of 2000 flight hours. Consideration may be given to applicates who have 1500 flight hours with relevant experience to related to the New York State Police mission to include operations in and around the NYC area, external load operations, NVG experience and qualification, hoist experience, and ISR experience.

M-2: may serve as the pilot in command of a NYS Police airplane or helicopter in designated missions commensurate with the training and standards outlined in the New York State Police Aircrew Training manual; perform executive transport missions for NYS executives and other government officials; perform specialized environmental missions; and maintain a sufficient understanding of aircraft systems to facilitate both in-flight problem solving and interaction with maintenance personnel.

Commercial Rotary with Instrument rating; or Commercial Single Engine Land and Commercial Multi-Engine Land Airplane rating with instrument privileges.

M-3: serve as the Pilot in Command of a New York State Police airplane or helicopter in designated missions commensurate with the training and standards outlined in the New York State Police Aircrew Training manual; may serve as an Executive Pilot in Command, either helicopter or airplane, or designation as a Unit trainer.

Commercial Rotary with Instrument Rating and Commercial Single Engine Land and Commercial Multi-Engine Land Airplane rating with instrument privileges; or Commercial Rotary with Instrument Rating and Certified Flight and Instrument Instructor; or Commercial Single Engine Land and Commercial Multi-Engine Land Airplane rating with instrument privileges and Certified Flight and Instrument Instructor; or Airline Transport Pilot Helicopter; or Airline Transport Multi-Engine Land.

M-4: serve as the Pilot in Command of a New York State Police airplane or helicopter in designated missions commensurate with the training and standards outlined in the New York State Police Aircrew Training Manual; may serve as Executive Pilot in Command, either helicopter or airplane, or designation as a Unit trainer.

Airline Transport Pilot Helicopter and Certified Flight and Instrument Instructor; or Airline Transport Pilot Multi-Engine Land and Certified Flight and Instrument Instructor; or Airline Transport Pilot Helicopter and Airline Transport Pilot Multi-Engine Land.

M-5: may serve as the Director of Operations; serve as the Executive Pilot in Command of a New York State Police airplane or helicopter in designated missions commensurate with the training and standards outlined in the New York State Police Aircrew Training Manual; administer the training and standardization program; serve as the Director of Safety and the Chair of the New York State Police Aviation Safety Council.

Certified Flight Instructor and Instrument Instructor Certified and either operational Aviation experience administering a similar program, and Airline Transport Pilot Helicopter certificate; or operational aviation experience administering a similar program, and Airline Transport Pilot Multi-Engine land certificate.
